All children have the right to be protected from harm. Children can also play an important part in their own protection by participating in the decision-making processes that affect them. Ensuring the participation of children in the child protection system has become a priority worldwide (Cossar, Brandon, & Jordan, 2014), in accordance with the increased recognition of Article 12 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC; Committee on the Rights of the Child, 2009). Research evidence highlights the benefits for children who are afforded this right. Children's participation in decisionmaking processes in child protection has been shown to have positive effects on children's well-being and sense of safety (Vis, Strandbu, Holtan, & Thomas, 2011), their acceptance of out-of-home placement decisions, higher placement stability (Cashmore, 2002), reduced anxiety or anger toward care decisions (Ten Brummelaar, Harder, Kalverboer, Post, & Knorth, 2017), and more successful and stable reunifications with families of origin (Balsells, Fuentes-Pelaez, Pastor,
