The practicing hydrogeologist is well aware of how aquifer heterogeneities influence our ability to make accurate predictions. Many so-called “anomalous” transport observations can be explained by (but not definitively attributed to!) heterogeneity in aquifer materials—from fast, well-connected flow paths causing early arrival to low-permeability lenses that contribute to back-diffusion and long tailing. Similarly, many hydrogeologists are likely familiar with the problem of obtaining markedly different parameter estimates from different aquifer tests, which again can often be attributed to heterogeneities and the aquifer volume sensed by a given test, that is, the scale effect.
