NRAO’s AIPS (Astronomical Image Processing System) is a body of programs and subroutines which is the main software system for the production, deconvolution and analysis of radio images made from VLA data. The goals of the AIPS project from its inception have been to produce synthesis mapping software within the framework of a general purpose, user-friendly, portable image processing system. AIPS has evolved to include most of the necessary mapping software, to be attractive and intelligible to users and to be modular and reasonably portable (and ported) to a variety of computers, operating systems and peripherals. NRAO distributes copies of AIPS free of charge to scientific research workers and supports them in a variety of ways. Although AIPS was developed primarily to support the VLA, it was designed with considerable generality; as a result, AIPS is suitable for use with non-VLA synthesis data and even for non-radio astronomical imagery.
