Laboratory experiments were conducted to measure the effect of fouling organisms on food uptake and nutrient release of scallop Chlamys nobilis in April and June 2006.The uptake rates of chlorophyll α and total particulate matter(TPM),the release rates of ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate were investigated. Results show that in April, there is a significant difference between fouled and clean scallops in chlorophyll α and TPM uptake rates(P0.001) and in ammonia and nitrite release rates(P0.001).However,there is no significant difference in nitrate uptake rates(P0.05).Fouled scallops consume phosphate while clean scallops release phosphate. In June, there is a significant difference in chlorophyll α uptake rates(P0.001) and ammonia and nitrite release rates(P0.001).There is no significant difference in TPM uptake rates(P0.05) and nitrate uptake rates(P0.05).Fouled scallops release phosphate while clean scallops consume phosphate. Therefore, the study shows that fouling organisms contribute much to phytoplankton depletion and concentration increase of ammonia in water. There is also food competition between fouled and clean scallops.
