Mooren's ulcer is a relatively rare but well-known disease of unknown etiology, graphically described as a marginal degen eration of the cornea, undermining the edge, and progressing relentlessly toward the cen ter, around the periphery, or into the sclera. It usually occurs in older individuals. Dur ing its prolonged, painful course, the corneal stroma is destroyed, but the eye rarely perforates.During a 3j/£-year period (January, 1963 to June, 1966) at the Sudan Interior Mission Eye Hospital in Kano, Nigeria, 37 cases of Mooren's ulcer were seen, representing an incidence of approximately 1: 2,200 in the clinic population. This paper describes cer tain variations from the classical form of the disease, and discusses various forms of ther apy.
