The school-based health center (SBHC) movement flourished throughout the 1980s. Originally conceived as medical clinics, most SBHCs have found it essential to expand their focus to mental health to meet an increasing demand. The purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the mental health facets of the movement and underscore research and development needs and opportunities. Specifically highlighted are (a) the need for conceptual and empirical work related to developing a mental health model for SBHCs that ensures they play a catalytic role in evolving comprehensive school-based interventions, (b) the opportunity to increase understanding of the mental health status and help-seeking attitudes and behavior of understudied populations and (c) the opportunity SBHCs provide for pursuing fundamental intervention concerns.
