MethodsSamples of blood were obtained from patients undergoing laparotomies for a variety of intra-abdominal diseases in which infection was believed to be absent.From 10 to 20 cc. of blood were aspirated by venipuncture with a sterile syringe and a 20-gauge needle from either the portal vein or one of its tributaries. Most samples were taken shortly after entering the peritoneal cavity and before the viscera were manipulated cxtensively.
