The article focuses on the dimensions nursing practice. Health and illness are not one dimension of nursing practice and do not form a continuum. They are two variables; one may have a disease and yet be living in a healthy fashion; one may have no disease and yet be unhealthy. Health is not a static quality, it is a way of living, of being, it is a way of growing, of becoming. It is less an attribute of the individual, as disease is, and more a phenomenon of the family or group. Nursing shapes the structure for learning: access to knowledge and information; opportunity for the community to participate in educational programmes for health and to evaluate its own health status and that of its families.
