N order to develop appropriate public health policies r; cw on screening for cancer of the cervix it is necessary to > T g consider the information available on the natural history I 1 5 of carcinoma in situ and other precursors of clinical invasive cancer, and on the outcome of screening, speciKsccA; fically relating incidence and mortality trends to intensity of screening in different areas or to comparisons between areas. These observational studies have difficulties but are the only ones available that enable us to assess the effectiveness of screening in view of the absence of any controlled clinical trials of screening for cancer of the cervix. It is then necessary to consider the appropriate approaches to screening frequency to achieve maximal impact with most efficient use of resources.
