In recent years new attention has been drawn to the connections and functions of the hippocampus. It is mainly due to Papez [1937] in his paper “A proposed mechanism of emotion” that this attention arose. The hippocampus had been considered for a long time to be associated with smell, but Brodal [1947 a and b], while working in Le Gros Clark's laboratory, found in reviewing the literature that the evidence for the olfactory function of the hippocampus is negligible.
