The alkali halide pressed disk method has been used to observe the infrared spectra of the unstable metaborate monomer and its cyclic trimer anions. These anions were prepared directly inthe host halide matrices by the oxidation of KBH4 or by the dehydration of KB (OH) 4. A tentative assignment of the fundamental vibrational frequencies of the cyclic trimer is presented.Although the use of alkali halide pressed disks2 3to obtain the infrared spectra of solid compounds is a standard procedure in spectroscopic laboratories, only a few attempts havebeen reported in which this tech-nique was employed to study spectroscopically the re-action kinetics34 in the solid state or to observe the infrared spectra of unstable chemical species. 3b These obvious extensions of the disk method havenot re-ceived much attention of spectroscopists, perhaps because of recognition by themof solid state anomalies4 associated with this techniqueand of the difficulty in interpreting the nature of the environmental effects5 on the vibrational modes of the solute species. While solutions to these problems are necessary ultimately for a complete interpretation of experimental results obtained by the disk method, we wish to show here that even without these solutions the pressed disk
