By rapid cooling, the β-U structure can be retained at room temperature in an U-1.5 at% Ga alloy. The metastable structure subsequently undergoes an isothermal shear-like transformation into a supersaturated solid solution of gallium in α-uranium. The intermetallic compound with the highest uranium content in the binary U-Ga system is U 3 Ga 5, space group Cmcm. Pu 3 Pd 5-type, with lattice parameters: a= 9.396, b= 7.575 and c= 9.387 Å.
