protease inhibitor, implying a contribution of cysteine proteases to skin antibacterial defense in both fish species. A series of our studies on skin proteases in Anguilliformes have experimentally established that epidermal cathepsins L and B play a primary role in defense against infection of virulent Gram-negative bacteria in the skin of freshwater fish. 2–10 Indeed, presenting results indicate the same role of these cathepsins, in particular cathepsin L, in that of marine fish. Any other roles of skin cathepsins L and B in anti-virus and parasite defenses, their correlation with other agents in antibacterial defense, and their activation mechanisms in response to microbial infection are being currently investigated in our laboratory.
