When individuals change jobs it is a significant event in their lives, and we have observed a social phenomenon. When professors change jobs we are absolutely fascinated. This may have led Caplow and McGee to their provocative study of The Academic Marketplace. My study begins with the early work on the academic marketplace and a recent study of small colleges.'This research was directed toward ascertaining the effects of some organizational variables in small colleges on the differential occupational mobility of their faculties. Previous research indicated that more than factors of supply and demand are operative in producing academic occupational mobility. There are elements related to the job and to the living environment connected with it. 2 Other influential conditions in choosing a job are courses to be taught, hours of classroom teaching assigned, competency of colleagues,
