Visible information on world agriculture can help to understand the current world agricultural status. The global maps for cereal yield and nitrogenous fertilizer application are composed of data sets provided by USGS (United States Geological Survey) and the FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations). Arable land is not distributed uniformly over the earth. Much arable land is located in Europe and Asia. The cereal yield is relatively high in the temperate zone, while that in the Tropics is relatively low. The use of nitrogenous fertilizer is high in Western Europe and East Asia, but quite low in Africa, except in the Nile basin. Agricultural activity in the Northern Hemisphere is higher than that in the Southern Hemisphere. Maps of arable areas and agricultural activity indicate that there is enough room to increase cereal production in parts of Africa, Australia and South America.
