'DNA finger-printing' by Restriction Fragments Length Polymorphisms (RFLPs) can distinguish individual pear cultivars by a paternity analysis as demonstrated in many other organisms, including humans. In this study, 17 cultivars of Japanese pear were identified from their specific hybridization patterns using human minisatellite DNA probes (33.6. 33. 15) . By using these analysis, eight hybrid Japanese pears were traced to their parents; 'Housui' was proven not to be a hybrid of 'Ri-14' X 'Yakumo'.
