This special issue contains 21 articles on the development and use of Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection surveillance systems around the world to provide data on HIV infection outcomes, risk factors, diagnosis, care, and treatment. Specific topics discussed in the articles include new surveillance methods which improve the representativeness of data; the use of surveillance data for the evaluation of interventions and services and to increase efficiency in use of health care resources and public reporting efforts; analyses of clinical outcomes surveillance data; and internet-based surveillance approaches. Several papers highlight the methods underlying two of CDC's supplemental surveillance systems: the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS) and the Medical Monitoring Project (MMP).
