Equine Arteritis Virus (Doll) was shown to be an RNA-Lipovirus of considerably less than 100 m[mu] diameter. A strain isolated in Switzerland (Bibuna) by the author from a conjunctival/ nasal swab of a horse suffering from Pferdestaupe shows the same properties and is serologically closely related to or identical with the American Bucyrus strain. Hence EAV would have been isolated for the first time outside the USA. The Swiss Bibuna strain shows in horse kidney cells marked prozonal inhibition either due to interferon, to incomplete virus or to a toxic factor. In vitro cross reactions with HCV or BVD viruses, agents showing certain similarities with EAV, could not be demonstrated till now. Established facts do not permit to range EAV, nor HCV or BVD, unequivocally within the groups of Arboviruses or Myxoviruses. Unless further data firmly place these 3 agents into one of these groups, it is suggested that they be put into the Haemovirus group (McLean), together with human hepatitis viruses.
