All of the authors are clearly fascinated by new and as yet unexplained aspects of bacterial life. As seen in Section I, there has been long-standing tension hetween single-cell views of bacteria, centred on Robert KOCH’S arguments, and the multicellular theory represented in the ideas of the great Russian soil microbiologist Sergei WINOGRADSKY. In the first chapter, M. DWORKIN deals with the philosophic aspects resulting from the new view of bacteria as a multicellular organism. It is very interesting to read about the development of our knowledge in this field, which was dominated for a long time by the ideas of Robert KOCH. Recent studies, especially by SHAPIRO’S group have led to a new understanding of bacterial life. Different regulative phenomena in colony morphogenesis are described in the second chapter, written by JA SHAPIRO himself.
