The best test animal is the hen, and most of the pathology has been carried out on this species. Although the distribution of the lesion may vary somewhat from compound to compound (Cavanagh et al., 1961) the lesion appears to be a “dying-back” process, the ends of the nerves distal to the nerve cell being affected and the lesion being confined to the long tracts (Cavanagh, 1964). There is thus no reason to believe that the basic biochemical mechanism leading to the lesion is different after treatment with different organophosphorus compounds. The pathology in different species after administration of the same compound has been less studied.
