tive anatomy, embryology and paleontology have been used to infer relationships between metazoan phyla, but the lack of homologous characters between phyla and the convergent nature of other characters have made a consensus on metazoan phylogeny difficult to achieve. Particular difficulties include the relationships between the acoelomate and coelomate Bilateria, and between the deuterostome, protostome and lophophorate coelomates(Box I), the origin of coelomic spaces, the origin and relationships of the Mollusca, and the possibility of polyphyly among the Arthropoda’.Molecular sequence analysis Phylogenetic analysis of molecular sequences holds the promise of resolving these relationships.
