METHODSOxygen intake was determined by the Douglas bag technique; the diameter of the respiratory valve was 30 mm, and the inner diameter of the connecting tube was 33 mm. Expired gas was collected in a vinyl bag every minute until exhaustion. The collected gas volume was measured with a wet gasometer, and gas analysis was performed in duplicate with the Scholander micro-gas analyzer. Cardiac output was determined by the CO2 technique: Pacoz was estimated from the~~~~~ value measured with an infrared COa analyzer (Beckman, LB-I) at the point of maximal expiration. Pvo,, was estimated by rebreathing a gas mixture (5% CO2 in O,), a method which was devised by Jernerus et al.(12) and Klausen (13). From the Pacoa and Pv,,, thus obtained, the values of Cacoz and Cvooz were read on the CO2 dissociation curve. Heart rate and respiratory frequency were read from the polygraphic recording.
