Subsequent to a compact description of Bourdieu’s sociology of speaking, firstly the communication-theoretical deficiency of the “economy of linguistic exchanges” is pointed out. Secondly, with reference to the social-structural aspect of communication emphasized by Bourdieu, attention is drawn to the fact that communicative understanding unavoidably depends on its social-structural frame: subjects not only define themselves but also find to a communicative understanding out of their given positions within a special social field. Thus, Bordieu refers — without intention — to the social conditions of communicative understanding, and indicates the thematical crux of the pragmatics of communication — and its sociological aspects — which, until now, have mostly gone unnoticed by the theory of communicative understanding.
