The improvement of surface properties is very important for successful osseointegration of dental implants. This study attempted to apply carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for biomedical use and investigated the effect of CNTs on cell morphology in vitro. CNT coating was done on Ti by electrodeposition to improve the implant surface and in vitro culture was performed for osteoblastic cells (bone-forming cells). Osteoblast-like cells (SaOS2) were cultured on Ti with electrodeposited CNTs (Ti-CNT) for 3 days. The surface structure of Ti-CNT and the morphology of cells on the substrate were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The fibrous structure of electrodeposited CNTs did not change and CNTs did not separate from Ti during cell culture. As compared with the spindle-shape on a polystyrene culture dish, the cells on CNTs were flat and spread out in all directions, similar to those on Ti. Numerous filopodia extended toward the inside of the meshwork of CNTs. This suggests that CNTs have excellent biocompatibility and can be used for surface treatment as a binder for cell-adhesive protein adsorption on the Ti surface.
