Post-Reformation English Catholics have long been viewed as marginalized, excluded from political office and cut off from social and cultural interactions. But a new theme—that of integration—is emerging in this historiography, and this book is a welcome addition. Michael Questier, senior lecturer in history at Queen Mary, University of London, examines the social and political networks of the Brownes of Cowdray, the first and second viscounts Montague. In the process, he illustrates how a Catholic aristocratic family remained integrated into society and politics during the post-Reformation period. The family—and the first viscount in particular—wielded considerable authority and influence in the local setting and within the Catholic community generally.Building on French historian Sharon Kettering’s model of entourage, Questier argues that analysis of the network of people with whom the Brownes shared ties of kinship, patronage, clientage, or ideology, reveals the extent to which Catholicism remained a vital and consistent religious and political force through at least the 1640s.
