We recommend obtaining quantitative cultures of both the catheter and the peripheral blood from patients with indwelling venous catheters during evaluation for relapse of MAC. Patients who have catheters placed during uncontrolled MAC bacteremia should also be carefully monitored for development of a catheter-related infection. If possible, clinicians should attempt to control MAC bacteremia prior to placement of an indwelling venous device. Although strict guidelines do not exist for interpreting the differential counts for the catheter and peripheral venous blood [6], we advise that catheters be removed when counts of MAC from catheter blood greatly exceed counts in peripheral venous blood.
