The Self Help Employment Center project was designed to test the effects of peer mutual support and self help in conjunction with professional vocational rehabilitation services on employment for people with serious mental illness. A total sample of 161 individuals were randomly assigned to either an experimental or a control group. Those in the experimental group received services at the Self Help Employment Center. Those is the control group continued with their customary community service. Outcomes measured in intervals of six months included 1) time to first job; 2) average hourly wage, and 3) vocational rehabilitation status. Results from the first year of follow up assessments indicated significant improvement in vocational rehabilitation at twelve months for consumers receiving the Employment Center services. Implications for the incorporation of peer supports and self help group activities in professional vocational rehabilitation programs are discussed.
