Following a brief introduction on the domestication origin of crops based on the work of Charles Darwin, this review addresses a number of issues associated with the study of crop evolution from a long-term selection perspective. Information is presented under the following headings: the domestication process, centres of agricultural origins, time frame of domestication, domestication syndrome, inheritance and molecular basis of the domestication syndrome, genetic bottlenecks, and the potential for domestication among plant and animal species.
