This paper aims to compare the description given by Brantôme of François de Guise’s clothing on a day of June 1561 and the accounting archives of the ducal household in order to put into perspective the sartorial choices of the duke on a political occasion. Thanks to accounting sources, the paper also highlights what Brantôme’s description could not: The role that the different players took in building François de Guise’s appearances.
