Studies are described on the effects of repeated maximum isotonic and isometric contractions on the strength of pronation and supination of the hand and flexion of the elbow. Each daily training session consisted of 30 contractions at intervals of 1 minute. This was carried out by one group of subjects for 5-6 days. Another group continued until 20-28 training sessions were completed. Both types of training resulted in an increase in the strength measured both isotonically or isometrically, although the effects of static training were not immediately apparent. Static training, although carried out in only one position of the joint, resulted in an increase in all other positions tested. An improvement in muscle strength was also found in the antagonists of the same side and the corresponding groups of the opposite side. Static training in flexion caused an increase in the strength of supination and vice versa.
