Pediatric Policlinic of the University of Munich, Munich, Germany At the 25th Cold Spring Harbor Symposium on ..Quantitative Biology one of us (Hellbrugge') reported on circadian rhythmic changes of certain body functisns during the first year of life, Considering the changes of single functions as the heart frequency, body temperature, sleep-wakefulness pattern, electrical skin resistance and various renal functions we obtained the following results on the development of diurnal periodical changes in infants : 1. Different physiologic functions develop a certain circadian rhythm independently from each other. 2. The circadian rhythm of the different functions becomes apparent a t different times after birth. 3. During the development of circadian periodicity an increase in the range of oscillation occurs in all physiologic functions. 4. This increase of range in some cases is caused more by the increase of the upper width of oscillation during the light hours, in others by the increase of the lower width of oscillation during the dark hours.2 5. In man, also, the monophasic circadian rhythm seems to originate out of polyphasic cycles. 6. For the development of circadian rhythm the maturity of the child at birth is of essential importance. The circadian periodicity develops later in premature than in children born at term. The meaning and purpose of this exposition on the development of a circadian periodicity will not be to analyze each periodical function for itself, but to place in the center of attention the different ages of childhood a t which each function will develop first. The functions we investigated in special periods of child development a re to be compared with regard to the stage of their circadian periodicity.
