Sixteen stages of spermiogenesis are described for normal adult mouse. The first 12 stages of spermatid development form the basis for identification of successive steps in the cycle of the seminiferous epithelium. By combination of this classification of tubules with cell counts, developmental sequences of spermatogonia were determined. Spermatogonia of A, intermediate, and B types were identified. Type A cells multiply by a series of three divisions; after the third division most nuclei transform into spermatogonia of the intermediate type. Intermediate spermatogonia divide to form type B cells, which in turn divide to form resting primary spermatocytes. A few type A spermatogonia fail to transform into the intermediate type, remain mitotically inactive from tubule stage III-VIII, then divide at stage IX to initiate a new cycle of spermatogonial multiplication. Necrosis is considered an important factor in reduction of spermatogonia to a frequency less than would be expected on the basis of three divisions of the dormant type A cells at stage VIII. Likewise, cell death during meiotic division results in decrease of spermatids to 87% of the value predicted on the basis of primary spermatocyte counts.
