ABSTRACT A newly discovered specimen from the lower Sakmarian of the Saar-Nahe district in the Pfalz, southwestern Germany, shows a combination of skeletal characters that, when found separately, were thought to distinguish Batropetes (originally described as a reptile) from the microsaur Brachystelechus. If these specimens belong to the same species, the name Batropetes fritschi should be applied. The nature of the occipital condyle and first cervical vertebra as well as the structure of the palate and skull table demonstrate that this species is a microbrachomorph microsaur. The new specimen has a small number of long teeth, like those of the North American species Carrolla craddocki, but with three, rather than two, cusps. The jaw articulation is far forward, and the stapes articulates with the quadrate. In contrast with Microbrachis and Hyloplesion, there are four, rather than three, digits in the manus.
