Electron microscopy of whole mount preparations of mammalian and avian interphase nuclei indicate that the chromatin fibers converge and attach to the annuli of the nuclear membrane. Even when the annuli are pulled away the radial arrangement of converging chromatin fibers frequently persists. Similar configurations were seen in water-spread meiotic and mitotic chromosomes. The significance of the findings in relation to the non-random folding of the chromatin fibers of chromosomes is discussed.
