Abstract During the course of a study on radio-activa-tion analysis of such trace elements as strontium and barium in soil and plant with special reference to submerged soil and lowland rice (1), it was noticed that some soils in volcanic ash origin as well as the associated crop plants were remarkably rich in bromine of more than 50 ppm and its content seemed to be highly variable. This report deals with the data in this respect along with some milk data and the result obtained in a rice-seedling experiment to find out prevailing soil factors responsible for the variable na ure of bromine content in plants. In addition, this work was performed in connection with a series of the study on iodine taxi city with regard to “Reclamation-Akagare disease” a physiological disorder of lowland rice, which can be observed in newly-reclaimed paddy soils mostly in volcanic ash origin (2–5).
