The resurgence of arboviral diseases (e.g. dengue) that occurred in 1980-95 is briefly reviewed, and factors relating to their emergence as major public health problems (e.g. population growth, lack of effective mosquito control, increased mosquito densities and expanded geographical distribution, geographical spread of arboviruses and vectors, and genetic variation) are discussed.
