Discusses the problem of concepts, which started as a philosophical issue but became, in the 20th century, a topic for semantics and psychology. It is argued that although psychological research had discovered things about concepts that philosophical speculation never dreamed of, the psychological theories put forward to explain these phenomena exhibit internal logical difficulties that stem from their failure to address certain underlying issues about abstraction, the very philosophical issues with which Locke and the other empiricists wrestled. Some experimental issues are reviewed, and theoretical options offered by cognitive psychology are considered. The basic underlying issue is the difference between the intrinsic content of an object, or the material that would be there even if there were no cognizers, and the processed content, or the rule in terms of which the intrinsic content is represented. How this issue arises in the classical view, cluster theories, and featural and dimensional versions of prototype theory is considered.
