This chapter draws attention to basic principles that can be applied to non‐steady locomotion, and highlights general themes that have emerged from recent work. One can consider two broad categories of “non‐steady” behavior: anticipated, goal‐directed changes in velocity (speed, direction) or body height; and stabilizing responses to maintain a goal movement in the face of perturbations from it. Recent studies of non‐steady locomotion have focused on two themes: limits to maximal acceleration, and morphological and behavioral factors in turning mechanics. The factors that influence the animal's movement strategy include: accuracy of knowledge about the environment and ability to anticipate any upcoming changes in terrain; the movement goals; and the intrinsic mechanical interaction of the legs and body with the environment. The chapter also highlights aspects of muscle and joint coordination within the limb during non‐steady tasks.
