The authors briefly review the condition known as anisakidosis which can result from the ingestion of raw or undercooked fish or squid infected with the third stage larvae ofA. simplex. Although freezing and cooking the fish is believed to kill the parasite and prevent anisakidosis, the allergenic potential is not affected and IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reactions may follow ingestion or contact with infected fish. Of 29 cases of people allergic toA. simplex, 14 required emergency treatment and 3 were detained in hospital. It is suggested that the impact ofA. simplexon human health has been underestimated and that more measures are required to protect the public.
