The periosteum at the insertion of the adductor longus-pectineus insertion has been studied for aminopeptidase activity by biochemical and electrophoretic techniques in the normal state and after lathyric and surgical stimulation. Serum aminopeptidase was also studied. No differences in the aminopeptidase activity were found in the serum from normal, lathyric or surgical animals by either technique. Periosteum had three isozymes displayed by electrophoresis. Bands 1 and 2 were less prominent in normal and lathyric periosteum than in surgically stimulated periosteum. Biochemical studies also indicated that surgically stimulated periosteum had more aminopeptidase activity than normal or lathyric periosteum. It is believed that periosteal cells from lathyric rats have decreased aminopeptidase activity.
