Bursaphelenchus lignicolusn.sp. occurring mostly in axial and radial resin canals of wood of pine trees (Pinus densifloraandP. thunbergii) in Japan is described. The vulva has a wide, overlapping anterior lip flap similar to that ofLaimaphelenchusandRhadinaphelenchusbut the tail and spicule shape are as inBursaphelenchus. The lip region is high and offset, stylet 14 to 18 µ long with small basal swellings, ovary outstretched with single row of oocytes, postuterine sac extends three-fourths distance to anus, vulva is at 67 to 78%, female tail is subcylindrical with broadly rounded to digitate terminus, male tail is arcuate with talon-like pointed terminus surrounded by terminal alae and the paired, separate spicules have a sharply pointed prominent rostrum and cuticular-like projections on distal ends. The resin canal epithelial cells of infested wood were damaged and sometimes completely destroyed. The destruction of epithelial cells was also observed on 2-year-old red pine seedlings 21 days after inoculation with 3, 000 to 5, 000B. lignicolus, while 7 to 13 inoculated seedlings developed symptoms of discolouration and wilting of leaves and died in 40 to 50 days.B. lignicoluswas easily grown on cultures ofBotrytis cineras, Pestalotiasp., and several other fungi, including blue stain fungi.
