Editing a medieval text often means taking it out of its original context. Such a decontextualization is observable in the case of a saint’s medieval German legend Christophorus C, which was edited in the 1930s as part of a larger study on Saint Christopher. Since then, the legend has either been seen as a single text or as one of the German legends associated with the life and death of Saint Christopher. But recontextualizing the legend in its original context opens new perspectives. It is part of a manuscript, which contains a number of texts dealing with basic knowledge on Christian faith and customs. Christophorus C is situated beween a vernacular sermon and a legend of Saint Alexius. Taken together, the three texts seem to supply three different answers to one question: How does one come in contact with the divine? Furthermore, this part of the manuscript is written in verse, which means it was probably intended to be read or recited aloud for an audience lacking religious education. Christophorus C, then, appears to be part of the late medieval religious culture and can be read as an attempt to convey possibilities of comunication with the divine to laymen.
