Competition around the world, in industry after industry, has intensified dramatically over the past two decades. This increasing ferocity has many causes, the most important of which is the rapid industrial development of the Pacific Rim, which has unleashed a flood of hungry new competitors into the international marketplace. As these firms fight to penetrate world markets and, more recently, fight off the counterattacks of Western companies, product prices have been forced down, while quality and responsiveness have improved. Customers again are king, and industry their servant.Just as important as this competitive transformation is the fact that its terms have been changing in a profound way, changes that have important implications for the role design will play in corporate success as the twenty-first century approaches. Fifteen years ago, most competition in the US was price-based. Occasional slip-ups in the quality of products, particularly surface blemishes or other non-performance-related defects, were dismissed as inconsequential." The American consumer will not pay for better quality," confidently stated one top auto industry executive to my class of MBA students in the mid-1970s.
