Approximately 3 years ago, in Vol. 35, we presented preliminary data regarding the potential for cloning murine alloreactive T cells {Watanabe et al. 1977). Subsequently it has been possible for us to isolate and characterize clones of murine alloreactive T cells {Fathman & Hengartner 1978, 1979a, 1979b, Hengartner & Fathman 1980) and clones of murine T cells reactive with soluble antigens (Kimoto & Fathman 1980). Utilizing clones reactive with alloantigens, as well as clones reactive with soluble antigens in combination with monoclonal antibodies directed at Ia antigens and a variety of congenic, recombinant congenic and mutant mice, it has been possible to demonstrate that I region encoded MLR stimulating determinants, Ia antigens and immune response genes are all associated with the same cell surface products and are indistinguishable.
