JLME COLUMN clear that some genetic information is not medical per se (eg, ancestry information and information about certain traits or characteristics like bitter taste perception) while other information clearly is (eg, results of a test for a single gene Mendelian disorder such as Huntington disease). It is much less clear, however, whether the provision of genetic risk assessment information for common and complex disorders constitutes the practice of medicine or how to treat companies that provide genome scans that provide both medical and nonmedical information to consumers.
