In this paper, the Gd2O3: Er3+/Yb3+/Li+ samples are prepared by sol-gel process. The upconversion(UC) fluorescence and temperature sensing properties are studied. The UC emission intensities are enhanced by endoping Li+ ions and reach the maximum value at the 5 mol% doping concentrations of Li+ ions. The temperature sensing characteristics of Er3+ ions are studied with the fluorescence intensity rate(FIR) technology. A high sensitivity(S-A) value with 0.02 K-1 at 573 K for non-thermally coupled levels (H-2(11/2) and F-4(9/2)) is obtained. The results demonstrate that the Gd2O3: Er3+/Yb3+/Li+ phosphor could be a candidate for high temperature detection applications. The optical heating effect based on the laser inducing is also observed, and the temperature is calculated about similar to 373 K at pump power 1940 mW. It indicates the Gd2O3: Er3+/Yb3+/Li+ phosphor may be used for therapeutic applications.
