In two related experiments either right first maxillary molars or right second and third maxillary molars of mice were extracted at 25 days of age to observe the long-term effect of partial loss of function on the interdental periodontium of the right first and second mandibular teeth. Four animals from each experimental group and three intact controls were sacrificed every 50 days thereafter. Microscopic observations over a 900-day period revealed that partial loss of function caused a moderate but progressive periodontal atrophy in the interdental region; this atrophy was more pronounced when the second and third maxillary molars were extracted. There was considerable loss of interdental bone, some resorption of cementum at the cemento-enamel junction, a concomitant detachment of fibers of the periodontal ligament, an apical proliferation of the epithelial attachment and a narrowing of the interdental space. The study showed that a particular mandibular molar in the mouse can be made to supraerupt if function is selectively removed from it. There appeared to be a constant attempt by the mandibular molars, in spite of the loss of opposing teeth, to retain functional relationships with each other, as evidenced by the continuous deposition of cementum and the formation of new groups of transseptal fibers. These findings suggest that partial function can play an extremely important role, not only in reducing the effects of disuse atrophy on the periodontium, but also in maintaining functional attachments of the teeth to each other.
