Catenary mooring systems are used for a number of offshore applications which may either be of a permanent or temporary nature. Permanent moorings are required for certain semi-submersible rigs which are used for production or accommodation platforms and occasionally for monohulls which are used for the storage of oil. In this case the mooring system needs to be able to survive extreme conditions due to wind and wave action. Temporary moorings are required for rigs or monohulls involved in a number of offshore activities including drilling, diving support and the transfer of oil to a tanker from another storage tanker. These applications often require that the vessel motion and heading variation should be restricted and the moorings may be used together with a dynamically positioned system. Typical mooring arrangements for monohulls and semi-submersibles are shown in Figures 15.1 and 15.2. Figure 15.3 shows a temporary mooring system for a ship where mooring lines are attached to permanently moored buoys and the ship’s anchors are also used.
