In this contribution we have outlined some of the developments that have taken place in the past 75 years and have illustrated these by reference to articles published in the British Journal of Radiology and its Supplements and reports. Wilhelm Conrad Rontgen's article on “A New Kind of Rays” reported in the Transactions of the Wurzburg Physical Medical Society in December 1895, was followed almost immediately by experiments in many parts of the world. The speed with which this discovery was taken up is understandable when we consider that many scientists besides Rontgen had been working in this same field of cathode-ray experimentation. The first use of these new X rays in the treatment of patients is accredited to Emil H. Grubbe in Chicago; he accidently gave himself a dermatitis and on the assumption that this was a form of cautery applied X rays to an advanced ulcerating breast cancer.
