Mediating the elasticity of concepts in thought and their precise materiality in practice is a general challenge in life and in intellectual artisanship, but it particularly pervades anthropology, since, potentially, we can work in every conceptual vocabulary, in every language and life-situation in the world. Some concepts have proved particularly challenging because of their theoretical centrality.‘Obligation’has been one such term. It covers precise relational qualities as well as the encompassing and enduring duties of status (Maine 1861). The force of rules and sanctions is complemented by the active voice: one can feel obliged, assume responsibility, define oneself and others as duty-bound.Such capaciousness can be an asset, by encouraging inclusiveness. In analysis and in law, however, resolution to precision demands intellectual and political artisanship.
